co-crochet computing stitches for collective and distributed crocheting

during this workshop, we computationally designed a branching structure. we then crocheted it together by each taking sections and using the grasshopper definition to adjust to our individual yarn, needles, and tension. in addition to the geometry we designed, our own fabrication methods became variables.

each part was started by a foundation row cast on and was then joined in the round for helical crocheting. both of these parts were done in single crochet and used a basic single crochet stitch (sc), a single crochet decrease (sc dec or sc2tog), and a single crochet increase (sc inc).

part 24
hook - 4.5mm cast on, 4.0mm main
yarn - sugar’ n cream, worsted, 4 ply, 100% cotton, soft ecru
cast on - 37
rows - 27

part 03
hook - 5.0mm cast on, 4.5mm main
yarn - sugar’ n cream, worsted, 4 ply, 100% cotton, soft ecru
cast on - 40
rows - 53

as each row was worked, the part began to take shape -- the safety pin on each part shows the foundation chain. while it was originally completely flat, as increases and decreases were worked into the fabric, the shape began to deform to the shape set in the grasshopper definition.
