this in-progress prototype explores reciprocal frames, and in particular, a joint within a traditional da vinci bridge. we're interested in the joint in the bridge where two horizontal members are held in place by two diagonal cross pieces. in these explorations, we're investigating how to control this system. this physical prototype tests three versions of the diagonal members--as well as our assembly process.










the 5-axis router was used to mill the diagonal pieces. milled from the short side of the member (1.5" wide), each cut uses a number of air cuts before cutting into the material at the appropriate angle. after these cuts, drill holes are milled and the member is flipped over for cuts on the other side.
